4 Key Measures of an Effective Swing:  Golf Swing Mechanics

SwingSmart Golf Analyzer INSTANTLY transmits 4 key measures of your golf swing mechanics to your iPhone or iPad.  Now you can take an objective look at every swing.  COMPARE every swing.  SAVE your Best Swing for every club.

The Free SwingSmart App INSTANTLY displays for each swing:

1. TEMPO

Swing tempo is a ratio that compares how long it takes to get to the top of your backswing versus the time to impact (your downswing).

Most PGA Tour stars have a 3 to 1 ratio as their Tempo.  This means your backswing takes 3 times as long as your downswing to the ball.

2. SWING SPEED

Swing speed refers to the club head speed at impact.  The higher the swing speed, the farther you’ll hit the ball (assuming you’ve hit it squarely on the sweet spot).

The SwingSmart Free App will compute an accurate swing speed at every point of your swing.

3. FACE ANGLE

Club face angle refers to the position of the club face, which ultimately dictates the spin and direction of the ball.  If the club face is closed relative to your swing path, the ball has draw sidespin (ball traveling right to left for right handed golfers).  If open, the ball has fade sidespin (ball traveling from left to right for right handed players).  Face angle square to the swing path means little to no sidespin.

The 3 paths of the clubface on the downswing show the spin effects of face angle:

  • In-to-In:  A square club face at impact makes the ball travel straight
  • Out-to-In:  Depending on severity, this can produce a gentle fade or slice, with blocked shots to the right
  • In-to-Out : Depending on severity, this can product a draw or pull -- or "left hook"

Looking at the direction of the ball as a result of Face Angle:

  • Open Face Angle:  ball travels to the right or slices (with left to right spin)
  • Square Face Angle:  ball travels straight with end-over-end spin
  • Closed Face Angle:  ball travels to the left or hooks  (with right to left spin)

Face angle is relative to where you started your swing.  This is why the SwingSmart includes the Peter Kostis Aiming Triangle -- use it as a visual aid to line up your club perfectly square to the target.

4. ANGLE OF ATTACK

Angle of attack refers to whether the club head is traveling in an upward, level or downward angle with respect to the ground at impact.  Golfers can:

  • Hit UP on the ball
  • Hit DOWN on the ball
  • Have the club head LEVEL with the ground at impact
